Puri Rath Yatra Stampede: Two Dead, 33 Devotees Rescued After Crowd Surge Near Jagannath Temple
Officials said a sudden crowd surge caused suffocation and panic-like conditions, and 33 devotees were rescued and taken for treatment.
- On Thursday, two devotees died and roughly 100 were injured during the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri as a dense crowd surge occurred on the Grand Road, also known as Badadanda.
- Officials clarified no stampede occurred, stating one devotee died from suffocation caused by sudden crowd density, while another died of cardiac arrest in a separate, unrelated incident.
- The Special Rescue Unit of the Odisha Fire and Emergency Service rescued 33 devotees trapped since Thursday morning. "The rescued devotees were immediately provided first aid and oxygen support before being shifted to nearby hospitals for further treatment," the police said.
- One deceased devotee was identified as Anil Das from Keonjhar. Biju Janata Dal president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief, pledging his party's full assistance to those affected.
- Lakhs of devotees had gathered to witness the annual ceremonial procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple onto their respective chariots.
