Obamas hail ‘true giant’ as they credit Jesse Jackson for their success
The Obamas praised Rev. Jesse Jackson's 60-year civil rights activism and credited him with inspiring their political journeys and reshaping American politics.
On February 17, Barack and Michelle Obama issued a joint statement saying, 'Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of a true giant, the Rev Jesse Jackson', crediting him with laying the foundation for Obama's presidential campaign.
Jackson organised boycotts and sit-ins, led voter registration efforts, and his 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns expanded the nation’s view of Black leadership.
Michelle Obama recalled an early connection to Jackson, seeing political organising at the Jacksons' kitchen table when she was a teenager, and Jackson endorsed Barack Obama in both campaigns.
President Joe Biden praised Jackson's leadership and said he influenced generations of Americans and elected leaders, while Former President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also honored his human-rights work.
Jackson died at 84; civil-rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton said 'He was a consequential and transformative leader who changed this nation and the world. He shaped public policy and changed laws.
