NYC nurses reach a deal to end a strike at 2 major hospitals while walkout continues at another

The New York State Nurses Association secured a three-year deal raising wages over 12%, preserving benefits, and adding workplace protections for over 10,000 nurses at major NYC hospitals.

  • On Monday, the New York State Nurses Association announced a tentative deal with Montefiore and Mount Sinai to end a nearly monthlong strike.
  • Staffing and safety complaints prompted the Jan. 12 strike, with nurses striking over staffing levels, workplace safety, health insurance and other workplace concerns.
  • The contract includes pay, benefits and new safety provisions for roughly 10,500 nurses, with a 12% pay raise over three years, health benefits with no additional out-of-pocket costs, and protections for transgender and immigrant nurses and patients plus artificial intelligence safeguards.
  • Meanwhile, nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian remain on strike, so the walkout continues at that hospital system.
  • Hospitals had to hire temporary nurses amid a demanding flu season as nearly 15,000 NYSNA members held the line for four weeks, the union said.
