Fallen N.W.T. wildfire fighters identified
Transportation Safety Board investigators found evidence the Bird Dog may have broken up in flight as officials named two victims.
- On Wednesday, Northwest Territories fire officials identified two of the three people killed in a plane crash near Fort Simpson on June 24 as Ryan Beck and Olivier Lamy.
- Beck was an air attack officer trainee in his second season, while Lamy was an experienced air attack officer who previously fought wildfires with Parks Canada, both working for the territorial government.
- The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the Turbo Commander 690 crash, which occurred about 50 kilometres from Fort Simpson, with preliminary evidence suggesting the aircraft may have fallen apart mid-flight.
- A public celebration of life for Beck will be held July 10 in Yellowknife at the Buffalo Airways hangar, as N.W.T. Fire noted the loss is "felt far and wide in the wildfire community."
- Officials have not yet confirmed the name of the third victim, though Buffalo Airways stated one of its aerial firefighting pilots also died during the June 24 operations.
