Nuclear powers increasing deployment of warheads, SIPRI warns

SIPRI said about 4,012 warheads were deployed worldwide as major powers modernize arsenals and take more weapons out of storage.

  • On Monday, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute released its 2026 annual report revealing that all nine nuclear-armed countries modernized and expanded their arsenals throughout 2025.
  • Hans Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists said states are "flexing their nuclear muscles," warning that major powers are "walking away" from disarmament commitments and creating new risks.
  • China modernized its nuclear forces faster than any other country, increasing its stockpile to about 620 warheads and constructing 775 land-based missile silos as of January.
  • Germany has begun talks with France on closer cooperation in nuclear deterrence, as President Donald Trump repeatedly casts doubt on NATO commitments following the New START treaty's February expiration.
  • North Korea continues expanding its capabilities with about 60 assembled warheads, while Russia and the United States combine for about 83% of all deployable nuclear warheads worldwide.
