NJ elementary school drops Thomas Jefferson’s name over slave ownership
Summary by Ground News
After a yearlong effort by students, the South Orange Maplewood Board of Education voted earlier this summer to rename Jefferson Elementary School to Delia Bolden Elementary School. Winne Delia Bolden was the first Black woman to graduate from Columbia High School in 1912. The process to change the name of the school began in August of 2021 and was led by the school's students. Students had a list of options to choose from, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg Elementary. Thomas Jefferson was known to own as many as 600 slaves in his lifetime.
