Nigerian Student Dies After Suffering Injuries in Russian Airstrike
The university said she died in Germany after suffering 90% burns, and 12 other people were injured in the strike.
Nnani Adaobi Marian, a 23-year-old Nigerian graduate, died Sunday in a German hospital following severe injuries sustained during a June 29 Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
Adaobi traveled to Ukraine to collect her diploma from Kharkiv National Medical University and was en route to a graduation photo session with her friend, Fatima Huseynova, when the aerial bomb struck.
Fatima died at the scene while 12 others were injured, and Adaobi sustained critical injuries including 90% burns on her body during the attack.
The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor noted doctors "fought for her life until the very end," while Kharkiv National Medical University stated, "Everyone sympathized, helped and hoped for her recovery, but they could not save her life."
Adaobi had studied at the university since 2020, completing internships at Cambridge and Biruni University, while she and Huseynova had been living in Azerbaijan and studying remotely since the invasion began.
