Nigerian Govt Suspends Services to Air Peace, Ibom Air, Nine Others
The regulator said the move targets unpaid statutory charges and could disrupt inspections, certifications and other services until debts are settled.
- On Friday, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority ordered its directorates to suspend regulatory services to 11 domestic airlines over unpaid statutory charges. Director of Finance and Accounts Olufemi Odukoya issued the directive implementing a "no-pay-no-service" arrangement.
- At the centre of the dispute are the five per cent Ticket Sales Charge and Cargo Sales Charge , funds collected for safety oversight. Many domestic carriers battle severe financial pressure from rising aviation fuel prices and foreign exchange constraints.
- Affected carriers include Air Peace Limited, Ibom Air Limited, Arik Air Limited, United Nigeria Airlines, Umza Air, NG Eagle, Max Air Limited, Caverton Helicopters, Overland Airways, Rano Air, and ValueJet. These operators face disruptions to aircraft inspections and certification renewals.
- Operators have initiated discussions with the regulator to resolve the debt crisis. "Yes we are meeting with the NCAA," one operator said, adding that flight operations continue normally while parties work out repayment arrangements.
- The federal government previously waived 30 per cent of airline debts to mitigate operational costs, though implementation remains stalled. Alex Nwuba stated the memo aims to force industry negotiations rather than shut down operations.
