Nigeria: Opposition PDP Submits Goodluck Jonathan's Presidential Candidacy
The party said the manual filing includes Goodluck Jonathan and all other candidates, and INEC acknowledged receipt despite refusing digital access.
- On Friday, the Tanimu Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party manually submitted its candidate list, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, to the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja.
- The committee manually filed the list after being denied access to the digital portal, deepening the party's leadership crisis as a rival faction previously uploaded Sandy Onor as their presidential candidate on July 12.
- PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong asserted full compliance with the Electoral Act 2026, accusing the commission of abandoning neutrality. "The Commission's actions have regrettably reinforced the growing public perception that it is no longer acting with the impartiality expected of the nation's electoral umpire," Ememobong said.
- Ememobong warned the commission against publishing any list other than the one submitted by the committee. "Should the Commission publish names other than those lawfully submitted by us... we are exhausting every constitutional, legal and democratic avenue to ensure that our party is not hijacked or annexed to the ruling party," he said.
- The faction alleges the PDP was the initial target of a campaign to weaken opposition parties, a trend Ememobong claims has now spread to other opposition parties. The electoral commission will soon publish the official list of candidates for the 2027 general elections.
