Sturgeon denies any knowledge of items husband bought with embezzled £400,000
Murrell pleaded guilty to diverting party funds for luxury goods, a motorhome and cars over 12 years, police said.
On Monday, former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh to embezzling £400,310.65 from the Scottish National Party over 12 years, with Judge Lord Young stating his actions constituted 'a gross breach of trust.'
Murrell's arrest in April 2023 launched Operation Branchform, a Police Scotland investigation into SNP funding that spanned four years across Europe, leading to his embezzlement charge one year later after he resigned in March 2023.
Between August 2010 and October 2022, Murrell diverted party funds to purchase luxury goods, a motorhome, and two cars, using false receipts and accounting to conceal his scheme while he 'craved but could not afford' the lavish lifestyle.
Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon and ex-party treasurer MSP Colin Beattie were arrested as part of Operation Branchform but both were later cleared of wrongdoing, while Sturgeon announced in January 2025 they had been 'separated for some time now.'
Sentencing on 23 June will follow a facts hearing on 2 June, concluding what Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston called 'one of the most high-profile investigations in recent times' in Scottish political history.
