Federal Budget Bill Could Put Offshore Wind Jobs at Risk
NEW YORK STATE, JUL 22 – The New York PSC halted offshore wind transmission plans due to a federal permitting freeze, delaying up to 8 gigawatts of new grid connections by 2033, officials said.
- Equinor reported a $955 million impairment on its Empire Wind offshore project in the United States on Wednesday due to regulatory challenges and tariffs.
- The impairment follows a mid-April halt and freeze on offshore wind permitting by the Trump administration, which had imposed 50 percent steel tariffs and expressed opposition to wind energy.
- Empire Wind 1, a profitable 816 MW project capable of powering 500,000 Brooklyn homes, saw $763 million of the impairment tied to its first phase and South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.
- Equinor’s CEO Anders Opedal reported that despite a 30 percent decline in net profit year-over-year to $1.3 billion, the company remains committed to advancing its renewable energy initiatives, with the Empire Wind 1 project now moving forward again.
- New York State paused its offshore wind transmission planning process to protect consumers amid federal uncertainty, but officials say offshore wind efforts remain alive and will resume after federal permitting restarts.
