Mortal Kombat III Confirmed to Be in the Works at New York Comic Con
New Line Cinema expands the franchise following record-breaking trailer views for Mortal Kombat II, with Jeremy Slater returning to write the third film.
- At Saturday's New York Comic Con panel, New Line Cinema announced Mortal Kombat III with Jeremy Slater, Mortal Kombat II screenwriter and executive producer, returning as screenwriter despite the sequel’s unreleased status.
- The red-band trailer's 107 million first-day views set a record, while Warner Bros. Pictures shifted the sequel's release from October 24, 2025 to May 15, 2026 and backs the film after the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot grossed over $84 million worldwide.
- Producers Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh and Simon McQuoid oversaw Mortal Kombat II, which paused one month for the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and finished in early 2024.
- With the sequel slated for theatrical-only release, Slater urged fans at NYCC to show up next summer, while studio enthusiasm prompted New Line and Warner Bros. to hire him for the next script.
- Looking to the video-game source, the 1995 Mortal Kombat 3 game suggests the third film could feature Shao Kahn invading Earthrealm, and Simon McQuoid said `Every time people have seen this movie, it gained momentum`, with the franchise kicking off next year.
