NEC Endorses 90-Day Economic Plan To Ease Cost Of Living For Nigerians
The plan targets food affordability, tax harmonisation and investment bottlenecks, with officials saying it should deliver direct benefits to Nigerians.
- On Thursday, the National Economic Council endorsed a 90-day economic action plan to reduce the cost of living and improve food affordability. The Federal Ministry of Finance proposed the plan to attract investment across Nigeria.
- Since President Bola Tinubu assumed office, Nigerians have faced the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation caused by petrol subsidy removal and international conflicts. These policies have impacted most of Nigeria's 200 million people with higher food costs.
- Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele presented the plan during the 161st meeting, identifying five priority areas: food affordability, tax harmonization, completing high-impact projects, resolving investment bottlenecks, and regulated household support.
- Vice President Kashim Shettima urged state governors to support the National Compressed Natural Gas Bus Initiative, emphasizing that program success depends on affordability and accessibility for commuters rather than vehicle deployment numbers.
- The NEC also addressed public health, urging 15 states to improve Ebola preparedness, while resolving to establish a joint financing framework for livestock development and a national dashboard to track federation projects.
