The funding will support anticipatory interventions as agencies warn of severe flooding in 14,118 communities and more than 1,500 deaths over five years.

  • On Thursday, the National Economic Council , chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, approved N83.2 billion for proactive interventions to mitigate flooding and climate-related disasters across Nigeria.
  • Authorities identified 14,118 communities across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory as high-risk flood zones this year, following past disasters that killed over 1,500 people and displaced more than 1.4 million.
  • Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State said the NEC approved 50 per cent of the N166.42 billion requested by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, with the Anticipatory Action Task Force managing the funds.
