Kobalt Recalls over 500,000 Yard Tools After Dozens of Reports of Batteries Catching Fire
The manufacturer said 34 batteries have smoked, sparked or caught fire, and consumers should stop charging them and request free replacements.
Federal safety officials announced Thursday a recall of more than half a million Kobalt yard tools, including trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws, and pruning saws equipped with 24-volt USB-C lithium-ion batteries.
The manufacturer reported 34 instances of batteries smoking, sparking, or catching fire while charging. Federal safety officials warned the batteries can short-circuit, creating a fire hazard when inserted in tools.
Sold at Lowe stores and online from January through May for $20 to $482, the recalled products are now subject to immediate safety action. Consumers must stop charging batteries immediately and contact the company for free replacements.
No injuries or property damage have been reported so far. The recall covers trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws, and pruning saws using faulty 24-volt USB-C lithium-ion battery packs.
Owners should verify equipment inclusion and follow instructions to secure free replacements, including a charger adapter, warning label, updated manual, and prepaid return shipping. This ensures safety while awaiting replacement units.
