NDP says it will vote with government on first budget confidence vote
The Liberal government considers opposition budget amendment votes as confidence tests to secure backing for its budget, despite being two seats short of a majority.
- The minority Liberal government survived the first of three confidence tests on its federal budget as Members of Parliament prepared to vote on two amendments in OTTAWA.
- Because the amendments call on MPs to reject the budget, Government House leader Steven MacKinnon's office said both are confidence matters and losing either could trigger an election as the government is two votes short.
- A Conservative sub-amendment was defeated as 139 MPs supported and 198 MPs opposed it, urging rejection of the budget for not presenting `an affordable budget so Canadians can have an affordable life`.
- The Bloc Québécois proposed the main amendment calling the budget `harmful to Quebec`, and Liberal MP Sean Casey said he expects the House to find a way to pass it.
- With the government now within two seats of a majority, interim NDP leader Don Davies said, `We had a discussion about the vote today and we decided we're going to vote no today, and we'll have a discussion tomorrow about the Bloc motion.
