National Senior Athletics Federation Competition: Dev Kumar Meena, Kuldeep Kumar Set New Benchmark in Pole Vault
The two Madhya Pradesh Academy trainees traded the mark three times and both later missed 5.50m, officials said.
On Sunday, pole vaulters Dev Kumar Meena and Kuldeep Kumar jointly rewrote India's national record at the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Cup in Ranchi, both clearing 5.45m at Birsa Munda Stadium.
Training together at the Madhya Pradesh Academy, the duo improved the national record three times this year through mutual competition. Their collaborative approach has elevated Indian pole vaulting standards significantly.
Meena claimed gold on countback after both athletes attempted 5.50m. Coach Ghanshyam Yadav said, "I'm glad that our boys could improve the national record."
Both athletes surpassed the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 5.25m and secured qualification for the 2026 Asian Games, advancing Indian pole vaulting on the international stage.
This performance at Birsa Munda Stadium may shift public perception of pole vaulting in India, building momentum since javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won Olympic gold in 2021.
