Tropical Storm Dexter Lingers in Atlantic; NHC Monitoring 2 Areas for Development
ATLANTIC BASIN, AUG 5 – Two Atlantic systems have a 40% chance of developing into tropical depressions or storms this week amid favorable conditions for increased hurricane activity in August.
- On Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring two Atlantic Basin areas for potential development after Tropical Storm Dexter weakens.
- Historically, the first two months of the Atlantic hurricane season yielded three named storms, and August typically ushers in active disturbances off Africa feeding warm Atlantic waters.
- Forecasters say the disturbance has a 10% chance of development in 48 hours and 50% over seven days, DaSilva said.
- Residents from the Carolinas to Florida face continued heavy rainfall, flood threats, high surf, and rip currents through the weekend, forecasters say.
- Looking ahead, forecasts indicate over a 40% chance of tropical development in the central tropical Atlantic during the week of August 13-19, and the next storms will be Erin and Fernand.
