ESA Confirms A11pl3Z as Third Known Interstellar Visitor
- Astronomers discovered a new interstellar object, provisionally named A11pl3Z, passing through the Solar System in early July 2025.
- Initial detection occurred on July 1 by NASA’s ATLAS program located in Rio Hurtado, with follow-up imaging conducted on July 2 using telescopes in Chile and the iTelescope network.
- A11pl3Z has a highly eccentric orbit estimated near 6.0, travels at about 60 kilometers per second, and is currently near 18.8 magnitude near the border of Serpens Cauda and Sagittarius.
- On July 3 at 6:00 p.m. EDT, an online event will stream live observations of A11pl3Z, allowing people worldwide to watch as telescopes continue tracking the object in real time.
- While the object poses no threat to Earth, astronomers note it moves too fast for a spacecraft mission but expect ongoing observations to refine its interstellar nature and trajectory.

Astronomers spot an interstellar object zipping through our solar system
By Ashley Strickland, CNN (CNN) — A newly discovered object speeding through our solar system is sparking excitement among astronomers because it’s not from around here. Believed to be a comet, the object is only the third celestial body from beyond our solar system ever to be observed in our corner of the universe. This interstellar visitor, now officially named 3I/ATLAS, became known when the NASA-funded ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last…
Astronomers track object possibly from beyond the solar system
Astronomers are monitoring an object headed our way that may have wandered over from another star system.Scientists have discovered what might be only the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system, the European Space Agency said
Astronomers spotted a third ‘interstellar object’ streaking through our solar system
Astronomers have just confirmed the discovery of a rare visitor from beyond our solar system — a newly detected interstellar comet. Officially named 3I/ATLAS, the comet was first spotted on July 1 by NASA’s ATLAS survey telescope in Chile. This is only the third known interstellar object to pass through our cosmic neighborhood, following in the footsteps of 1I/ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. The interstellar comet is currently travelin…
Scientists Are Still Trying to Explain Mysterious Space Object 'Oumuamua's Odd Behavior
Nearly five years after its discovery, the interstellar object continues to baffle astronomers. A new analysis suggests a natural, non-alien origin for its strange movement.
