Naomi Osaka overpowers Aryna Sabalenka to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals
On Sunday, Naomi Osaka defeated women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 on Centre Court, reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time.
Sabalenka had dominated their rivalry this year, winning all three meetings prior to Wimbledon, including at the French Open, Madrid, and Indian Wells.
During the 32-minute opening set, Sabalenka was left "screaming in frustration" as her power game misfired, while Osaka stayed "cool in the tiebreak" to seal victory.
This victory marks Osaka's first win over a world No. 1 player since defeating Ash Barty in Beijing in 2019, demonstrating her renewed form on grass.
Returning from maternity leave that caused her to miss all of 2023, Osaka has now successfully advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals, signaling her competitive recovery.
