More than half of contributing states plan to withdraw over 1,000 National Guard troops this fall after over 4,000 arrests amid a federal crime response in Washington, D.C.
- Later this year, more than half the states contributing National Guard troops have set target withdrawal dates, with Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia planning their pullouts, officials told The Associated Press.
- The Guard was activated in August after President Donald Trump issued an executive order proclaiming an emergency over crime concerns, and the order lapsed when Congress did not renew it.
- Roughly 2,300 Guard members from eight states and D.C., plus hundreds of federal law enforcement officers, remain in Washington, D.C., while the D.C. National Guard of around 1,000 forces has orders extended through December.
- A lawsuit by D.C.'s attorney general is challenging the deployment, with a hearing set for Oct. 24, while D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's office declined to comment.
- Ohio, Georgia, Mississippi and West Virginia say they will remove troops by Nov. 30; these five states make up more than 80% of the 1,300 out-of-state troops and official figures show more than 4,000 arrests since August.
