CARTHAGE, Mo. — July 5 has long been a historic day in Carthage, as residents remember an early battle of the Civil War, which happened here on July 5, 1861.

A monument to the Union soldiers who fought at the Battle of Carthage was dedicated on Saturday, July 5, the anniversary of the 1861 battle. Members of the public and interested parties turned out for the dedication on the northeast corner of the courthouse grounds in Carthage.
