MOSCOW, RUSSIA, AUG 5 – India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval meets Russian officials to discuss defence ties and oil imports amid US threats to raise tariffs on Indian goods, with India importing 42% of its oil from Russia.
- On Wednesday , National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived in Moscow for a two-day visit to discuss defence cooperation, oil sanctions, and a Modi-Putin summit.
- US President Donald Trump last week threatened 'very substantial' increases to the 25% tariffs on Indian goods, labeling India and Russia as 'dead economies'.
- According to Reuters, India purchased 1.75 million barrels per day of Russian crude, which made up nearly 42% of its total oil imports.
- The Ministry of External Affairs said, "Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," rejecting Trump's tariff threats as unjustified and unreasonable.
- These visits coincide with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation leaders’ summit from August 31 to September 1, 2025, and come ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's expected trip to India for the annual summit.
