- On Tuesday, the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved four multitracking projects worth Rs 24,634 crore, expanding the railway network by about 894 km.
- Planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the projects aim to ease congestion and improve operational efficiency for Indian Railways while supporting the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
- The projects include specific routes such as Wardha-Bhusawal and will boost capacity by 78 million tonnes annually, enhancing connectivity to around 3,633 villages with about 8.584 million people.
- The government estimates a cut in oil imports of 28 crore litres and CO2 reductions of 139 crore kg, and shares of state-owned railway companies rose by up to 6%.
- The projects will improve access to tourist sites such as Sanchi, Satpura Tiger Reserve, Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, Hazara Falls and Nawagaon National Park while providing seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services.
