Modi and Prabowo seal a deal for Indonesia to acquire India’s BrahMos missiles
The agreements expand defense cooperation and could make Indonesia the third foreign customer for BrahMos, officials said.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta, where leaders signed the guestbook at the Istana Merdeka during the official state visit.
This visit marks Modi's fourth trip to Indonesia, building on the partnership elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership status in 2018. The Ministry of External Affairs stated it "marks a significant step" in reinforcing bilateral ties.
Expanding security ties, Indonesia will import Indian-made Astra missiles and increase BrahMos inventory. Both nations plan to jointly develop Sabang port, located 100 miles from India's Great Nicobar port project.
India will support development of Indonesia-specific Electronic Voting Machines, reflecting confidence in Indian electoral technology. The nations also agreed to boost critical minerals supply chains through investments in steel, nickel, and rare earth magnets.
Arriving on Monday, Modi began his three-nation diplomatic tour with Indonesia as the first leg, with the visit scheduled from July 6 to 8. The engagement is expected to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework established in 2018.
