Brazil dismisses calls to relocate COP30 amid Amazon city price surge
BELÉM, PARÁ, BRAZIL, AUG 4 – Brazil faces accommodation shortages and soaring prices for COP30 delegates but insists the summit will remain in Belém to highlight the Amazon’s role in global climate efforts.
- On Friday, Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism launched a booking platform and plans to use cruise ships and public buildings to ensure fair accommodation access for COP30 delegates.
- Amid record demand, Belém, Brazil has only 7,900 hotel rooms and hotel owners are charging up to 15 times regular rates, Reuters reports.
- Data shows rates ballooned from $360 to $4,400 per night as Brazil offered 10 to 15 rooms at $220, exceeding the UN’s $146 limit.
- Voicing concern, United Nations officials contend that Belém’s accommodation prices risk excluding vulnerable delegates, as developing country delegates warn they cannot afford the rates.
- In addition, strained Belém’s airport and limited restaurant services may hinder logistics for COP30 delegates, despite Brazil adding two cruise ships with 6,000 beds.
