UNITED STATES, JUL 23 – Meta removed over 600,000 accounts linked to exploitation and introduced combined block and report tools to enhance protections for teens and child-focused profiles on Instagram and Facebook.
- In a blog post on Wednesday, July 23, Meta announced new safety features for teen users, highlighting efforts to combat exploitative content, Meta said.
- In response to scrutiny, Meta removed nearly 135,000 Instagram accounts earlier this year, following criticisms over failing to shield young users.
- Early uptake shows that the Location Notice was viewed one million times by teenagers and young adults in June, the nudity protection feature automatically blurs suspected explicit images in DMs, and a new integrated block-and-report option simplifies flagging harmful accounts.
- Consequently, over 600,000 accounts linked to predatory behavior, teens blocked one million and reported another million in June, and more than 40% of blurred images remained unviewed.
- In the coming months, Meta will share information through the Tech Coalition’s Lantern program, and these changes are expected to significantly enhance protections for young and child-managed accounts.
