Melanie C: Wannabe anniversary was a 'very emotional day'
Melanie C said the song’s 30th anniversary prompted a low-key reunion and social media tributes as the Spice Girls marked a defining hit that sold more than 8 million copies.
On Thursday, former Spice Girls singer Melanie Chisholm accepted the Global Impact Award at the Nordoff And Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, marking 30 years since "Wannabe" debuted.
Released on July 8, 1996, "Wannabe" propelled the five-piece group to global stardom, selling more than 8 million copies worldwide and launching their influential "Girl Power" agenda.
Chisholm described the anniversary as a "very emotional day," with band members Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown, and Geri Halliwell-Horner sharing social media posts to celebrate earlier this week.
The ceremony raised £52,000 for the Nordoff And Robbins music therapy charity, while Lily Allen received the Icon Award and Franz Ferdinand won best group.
Actor Richard E Grant, who played the band's manager Clifford in the 1997 film "Spice World," presented the award while wearing one of his original sparkling pink suits from the movie.
