Medicare unveils 2027 rates for private Medicare, Part D plans

CMS said most Medicare Advantage enrollees will keep the same or lower premiums, while some Part D plans may trim drug coverage.

  • On Tuesday, CMS announced average 2027 Medicare Advantage premiums will fall to $12 from $14.37 in 2026, while stand-alone Part D premiums will rise to $36.
  • The Part D increase follows the end of a Biden-era "demonstration project" that cost $9.8 billion in 2025 and 2026; CMS said the program is returning to normal market conditions.
  • Market stability remains high, with 97% of Medicare enrollees having access to 10 or more Medicare Advantage plan options for 2027, and total available plans holding steady at 5,532.
  • Juliette Cubanski, vice president and director of the program on Medicare policy for KFF, said insurers are "bending over backward to try and keep premiums as low as possible," though plans may trim drug formularies to offset costs.
  • Medicare open enrollment runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2027. John Brooks, director of Medicare at CMS, urged enrollees to assess whether their current plans still meet their needs.
