First Ebola Patients in Nigeria and Kenya Might Have Crossed Paths at Uganda Airport
Health officials are tracing 135 contacts as investigators probe whether the cases were acquired during travel through Uganda.
- On Thursday, African health officials reported that Ebola patients confirmed in Kenya and Nigeria may have crossed paths at Entebbe International Airport on October 3. Dr. Wessam Mankoula, head of emergency preparedness and response at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is investigating the potential interaction.
- The virus emerged in Congo in May, infecting more than 9,500 people and killing nearly half, while spreading to 66 health zones. Uganda declared its own outbreak over on August 27 after 42 consecutive days without new cases, yet officials are now tracing links to the country.
- Director General for Health Patrick Amoth confirmed Kenya reported nine cases as of October 19, including a 24-year-old family member of the first patient. Nigeria is currently monitoring 44 contacts linked to its first confirmed case.
- Uganda's Ministry of Health rejected claims of an active outbreak, stating that travel through the country alone is insufficient evidence of infection. Director of Health Services Prof Charles Olaro argued Nigeria has not provided necessary travel or clinical history for investigation.
- The US State Department raised its travel advisory for Kenya from Level 2 to Level 3 on Monday, asking Americans to reconsider travel. The US CDC separately issued a Level 1 notice for Ebola in Kenya, focusing on traveler health risks.
