Health insurance costs keep climbing for American workers, a new survey finds
Workers are paying 9% more of their premiums on average as employers raise deductibles and other costs to slow a 5% premium increase, KFF said.
- On Thursday, KFF, a nonpartisan health research organization, released its 2026 Employer Health Benefits Survey, finding family coverage premiums rose 5% to $28,303. Individual coverage reached $9,804 on average.
- Rising costs stem from increased utilization of medical services, skyrocketing prescription drug prices, and surging hospital fees. These factors collectively push premiums higher as employers manage the financial strain of providing benefits.
- Workers at smaller firms contribute an average of $9,687 toward family coverage, while the average deductible for single coverage reached $1,995 this year. Employees face significant out-of-pocket expenses before insurance kicks in.
- To manage expenses, companies are switching insurers or adding preapproval requirements for services. Jenna Caligaris, who manages an upstate New York contractor, said, "We're trying to maintain coverage and stay competitive."
- Projections suggest employer benefit costs could approach double-digit rates in 2027, potentially increasing pressure on employees. Matthew Rae, KFF associate director, warned that continued cost-shifting onto workers could significantly impact affordability.
