Sudden, heavy rain in Indian Kashmir leaves 46 dead, more than 200 missing
At least 46 people died and over 200 remain missing after a massive cloudburst triggered flash floods during a major pilgrimage, prompting large-scale rescue operations, officials said.
- A cloudburst triggered a flash flood in Chasoti village in Kishtwar district on Thursday, killing at least 46 people including two CISF personnel and injuring 100.
- Experts report rising cloudbursts in recent years, and the Indian Meteorological Department defines them as over 100 mm of rain in one hour.
- Authorities have pressed NDRF, SDRF and security forces into service, rescuing about 167 people with 38 critically injured survivors, officials said.
- Authorities suspended the pilgrimage after the flash floods halted pilgrims at the last motorable point, plunging the region into grief.
- Officials warn the death toll could rise as more people are reported missing; 21 bodies identified out of 46 retrieved, and 67 remain unaccounted for, officials said.
