Marianne Alto re-elected Victoria mayor as three newcomers win council seats
CHEK News projects Alto will keep the mayor’s seat after she led Bruce McGuigan by more than 10 points with 53 of 58 polls reporting.
On Saturday, Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto secured a second term, defeating challenger Bruce McGuigan with 44.69% of the vote to McGuigan's 34.3% .
Alto's victory follows her first election in 2022, when she defeated former councillor Stephen Andrew. She served on Victoria City Council for more than a decade before becoming mayor.
Voter turnout reached 38.25%, with 28,876 ballots cast among 75,490 eligible voters. This represents a slight increase from the 37.98% turnout recorded in 2022.
Three newcomers joined the council while five incumbents returned to their seats. Stephen Hammond topped the polls with 13,729 votes, though incumbents Susan Kim and Krista Loughton were unsuccessful in their re-election bids.
Alto said Saturday night, "I think that we're going to build a lot on some of the things that we started in the first term." The council faces major issues including housing affordability, public safety, and downtown revitalization over the next four years.
