Voters across B.C. select new mayors and councillors. Live updates here.
About 3,500 candidates are on ballots provincewide as voters choose mayors, councillors, trustees and regional district directors, officials said.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, British Columbia residents cast ballots in general local elections, selecting representatives for 162 municipalities and 27 regional districts from approximately 3,500 candidates across the province.
The municipal contest occurred amidst a controversial provincial snap election called by NDP Leader David Eby, despite the Union of B.C. Municipalities passing a resolution last month urging him to avoid scheduling provincial voting during the local campaign period.
Former union president Cori Ramsay noted that overlapping campaigns caused voter confusion and forced local campaigns to lose staff; many municipalities nonetheless reported increased or record-breaking turnout during advance voting periods.
CHEK News provided live coverage throughout Saturday evening as polls closed at 8 p.m., airing its Island Votes: Civic Election Special at 10 p.m. on TV, CHEK+ and YouTube for the 36 Island municipalities.
With municipal voting concluded, British Columbia's focus shifts to the provincial general election, where advance voting continues until October 21 ahead of final voting day on October 24 for 15 Vancouver Island ridings.
