Doug McCallum Once Again Surrey Mayor
McCallum won by a wider margin in the rematch after Locke beat him in 2022 by 973 votes.
On Saturday, Doug McCallum of Safe Surrey Coalition defeated incumbent Brenda Locke to reclaim Surrey's mayor's office. McCallum led by about 10,000 votes with 108 of 164 voting places counted.
The election rematch reversed the 2022 result when Locke defeated McCallum by 973 votes. Voters cited dissatisfaction with Locke's handling of the Surrey Police Service transition, a contentious campaign issue alongside public safety and property tax concerns.
Campaigning since May, the Safe Surrey Coalition team completed over 60,000 door-knocks addressing public safety and tax concerns. Gordie Hogg finished third with 24,916 votes, followed by Jinny Sims with 14,895 and Sukh Dhaliwal with 9,629.
Shortly before 10 p.m., Locke conceded, stating, "The voters have truly spoken." McCallum told supporters, "Together we are going to build a great city," as his slate appeared on track to sweep seven of eight council seats.
McCallum's agenda includes freezing property taxes for four years and acquiring a helicopter for the Surrey Police Service. He also intends to implement a ward system for city councillors to address infrastructure and affordability challenges ahead.
