Updates on Black Cove complex fire affecting Henderson, Polk counties
- Since March 19, 2025, the Black Cove Complex Fire, along with the Deep Woods and Fish Hook fires, have been burning in Polk and Henderson Counties, North Carolina, prompting responses from the N.C. Forest Service, Polk County Emergency Management, and over 50 fire departments across the state, with the Black Cove Complex initially deemed the highest priority fire in the South.
- These fires have been fueled by dry weather, steep terrain in the Green River Gorge, gusty winds, and low relative humidity, exacerbated by the presence of severely damaged woods from Hurricane Helene six months prior, creating conditions ripe for rapid fire growth and spread.
- As of Tuesday, March 25th, the Black Cove Fire had grown to 3,046 acres with 0% containment, the Deep Woods Fire had reached 2,923 acres also with 0% containment, and the Fish Hook Fire was at 199 acres with 72% containment, leading to multiple mandatory evacuations and shelter openings at 75 Carmel Lane in Columbus, NC.
- N.C. Forest Service spokesperson Bo Dossett noted the unprecedented nature of the event for Western North Carolina, while resident Ron Chmielewski, preparing for his second evacuation in Polk County, lamented, "It's just too many negative things happening in such a short time," as flames reached 50-60 feet.
- The fires have resulted in the destruction of at least 10 homes and damage to other structures, with one firefighter injured, even as firefighters focused on structure protection and establishing fire lines and officials hosted community meetings to provide updates and preparedness information, while a statewide burn ban remained in effect to mitigate further risks.
