'Maratha Military Landscapes' of India Inscribed on World Heritage List: UNESCO
MAHARASHTRA, INDIA, JUL 11 – Twelve forts linked to Maratha rulers, including Shivaji Maharaj, were recognized for their 17th-19th century military architecture, becoming India's 44th UNESCO World Heritage site.
- During the 47th World Heritage Committee session in Paris, the inscription of 12 Maratha forts was approved after an 18-month evaluation process.
- Following the January 2024 submission, India's nomination underwent an 18-month evaluation involving technical meetings and an ICOMOS site review.
- According to UNESCO records, 18 of 20 State Parties endorsed the inscription after a 59-minute deliberation, calling it an 'exceptional cultural testimony' by the committee.
- Following the inscription, UNESCO rules will govern site upkeep, with mountaineers and the government responsible for ongoing conservation efforts.
- More broadly, India now has 44 World Heritage sites, ranking sixth globally and second in Asia-Pacific, with 62 on the Tentative List and active WHC membership, strengthening its cultural footprint.
