Manhunt after two border force officials stabbed

  • Early Thursday morning in Sydney, a 28-year-old Tongan man stabbed two contractors working for immigration detention while being transported to Sydney Airport for deportation.
  • The man assaulted the contractors with a sharpened metal object inside a non-secure van, then escaped at Clyde, prompting a police search with dogs tracking him towards Harris Park.
  • The detainee is about 180cm tall, has a large build, black hair, dark eyes, is unshaven, wore a dark jacket, dark pants, and black-and-white sneakers, and he is known to police.
  • Two men, aged 54 and 36, were taken to Westmead Hospital with non-life-threatening stab injuries; Superintendent Glasser urged anyone who spots the suspect to avoid confronting him and to promptly notify the police.
  • Police continue to investigate and search the area with specialist units and urge anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 to assist in locating the man.
