Maldives begins 'generational ban' on smoking

  • On November 1, the Maldives government enacted the Second Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, banning people born on or after 1 January 2007 from buying, using, or selling tobacco.
  • The Maldives Ministry of Health said the measure aims to protect public health and cultivate a tobacco-free generation while aligning with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
  • Violations trigger heavy fines, with penalties including 50,000 Maldivian rufiyaa for selling to minors and last year's general vaping ban covering all ages.
  • Quoting tourism data, Ahmed Afaal argued there have been no cancellations and arrivals grew in the past year, while tourists must adhere to the ban and more than 2m visitors are projected next year.
  • Compared with other countries, New Zealand and the United Kingdom debated similar generational bans but the Maldives is currently the only country enforcing a lifetime generational tobacco prohibition.
