Malaysian rapper Namewee released on bail in probe into Taiwanese influencer’s murder

Namewee was released on police bail after nine days in custody as investigations continue with no evidence linking him to Iris Hsieh's death, authorities said.

  • On Nov 13, Wee Meng Chee, known as Namewee, was released on police bail until Nov 26 pending the post-mortem and must report back then.
  • On Oct 22, Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin was found dead in a Kuala Lumpur hotel bathtub while reportedly working on a video with Wee Meng Chee, known as Namewee, and authorities reclassified the case as murder on Nov 4.
  • Police recovered pills from the hotel room, investigators said, including nine blue pills believed to be ecstasy, while Namewee tested positive for amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine and THC.
  • Attorney-General Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said investigators found no leads linking Namewee and confirmed his release, adding the AGC will act if new findings emerge before the Nov 13 remand lapse.
  • Reports show toxicology may take up to three months; investigation papers will be referred back to the Kuala Lumpur Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office, with murder penalties in Malaysia including death or caning, and Namewee faces a Dec 18 court mention for drug offences.
