Scientists examine if today’s early morning South Island quakes were linked

A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit in Canterbury this morning was quickly followed by two moderate ones on the other side of the South Island.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake has woken Cantabrians. People reported feeling the 5km-deep quake, centred 35km west of Culverden, as far as the West Coast, GeoNet says.
