Machete-Wielding Man Shot Dead by Police at Sydney Shopping Centre
MOUNT DRUITT WESTFIELD SHOPPING CENTRE, SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, JUL 14 – A 29-year-old man wielding a 50cm machete was shot dead after threatening police during a brawl involving two groups of women, with officers praised for their swift response.
A machete-wielding man approached police at the Westfield Mount Druitt shopping centre, prompting officers to shoot him after he refused to drop the weapon.
Emergency services confirmed that the man, in his 20s, was treated by paramedics but later died at the scene.
Former NSW Police Detective Superintendent Robert Critchlow called for a review of safety protocols at large malls to address rising incidents of violence.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood reported that the fight involved two groups of women, and the man was known to police but had no extensive criminal history.
