Lithuania PM-Designate Sold State Land at Fivefold Profit While Serving as Mayor
Mindaugas Sinkevičius becomes the third Social Democrat prime minister since the party won the 2024 election, and he has 15 days to form a cabinet.
On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda appointed Prime Minister-designate Mindaugas Sinkevičius to lead the government, replacing Inga Ruginienė who resigned last week following a coalition reshuffle.
As the third Social Democrat to serve as prime minister since the party won the 2024 parliamentary election, Sinkevičius brings extensive experience as mayor of Jonava from 2011 to 2016 and again from 2019.
An LRT investigation published Wednesday revealed Sinkevičius sold a plot on Jonas Basanavičius Street for 55,000 euros in 2025, having purchased it for 11,671 euros as the sole bidder in 2024.
With 15 days to form a cabinet and prepare the government's programme, the 42-year-old politician must secure approval from the Seimas and coordinate with President Nausėda.
Previously, the Supreme Court of Lithuania dismissed criminal proceedings against Sinkevičius concerning municipal fund usage, clearing a hurdle from his brief 2016 tenure as economy minister.
Lithuania has a new head of government. The Vilnius Parliament elected the Social Democrat Sinkevicius as Prime Minister of the Baltic EU and NATO states. He promised stability in "difficult times".
