Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani set to become next CDS
On Saturday, May 9, 2026, the Government of India appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff and Vice-Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of Naval Staff.
General Anil Chauhan will complete his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff on May 30, 2026, while CNS Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi concludes his term on May 31.
Raja Subramani has served as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025, and previously held roles as Vice Chief of the Army Staff and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command.
Swaminathan is set to serve as Navy chief until December 31, 2028, while Subramani becomes the third person to assume the Chief of Defence Staff post after Gen Bipin Rawat and Gen Anil Chauhan.
The appointments position India's defense leadership for a multi-year transition, with Swaminathan overseeing naval modernization through 2028 and Subramani taking the helm of overall defense coordination starting May 31.
