Gauteng's New Number Plates Have Finally Been Unveiled
- On Thursday, 5 June 2025, the pilot phase of a tamper-proof number plate initiative was officially launched at Johannesburg’s Nasrec Expo Centre by Gauteng’s Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, alongside Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, the province’s Transport MEC.
- The launch follows Lesufi's December 2022 announcement and February 2023 State of the Province Address pledging to fight crime linked to fraudulent and undocumented vehicles using new plates.
- The number plates incorporate the country's flag and code, include a QR code linked to vehicle data, and use tamper-resistant stickers that break if removal is attempted, making it difficult to clone or switch plates.
- Lesufi highlighted that fake number plates and unregistered vehicles play a significant role in criminal activities across Gauteng, with approximately 85% of offences involving cars used as getaway vehicles.
- The system’s pilot aims to improve vehicle tracking and reduce vehicle-related crimes, with continued testing on the provincial government fleet during the 2024/25 financial year.
