The $650 million project will replace the 145-year-old penitentiary and includes expanded vocational space to improve inmate rehabilitation, state officials said.
- On Tuesday, the South Dakota Legislature approved and Gov. Larry Rhoden signed SB 2 to fully fund construction of the South Dakota Correctional Facility, a 1,500-bed men's prison in Sioux Falls.
- After an $825 million plan failed this year, Gov. Larry Rhoden created the Project Prison Reset Task Force to redesign the replacement for the 144-year-old South Dakota State Penitentiary.
- Following House approval, the legislative committee approved the bill 13-2 and the South Dakota Senate passed it 24-11 before forwarding it to Gov. Larry Rhoden.
- Moving the site to Sioux Falls saved roughly $175 million compared with Lincoln County, though Rhoden's office said the state lost about $21 million and added more than 27,000 square feet for inmate vocational spaces.
- With a four-year build estimate, legislators expect ground breaking in spring 2026 and inmates likely arriving by spring or summer 2030, according to the South Dakota Department of Corrections.
