Legacy Elementary features 36 classrooms and tributes to 21 victims, supporting healing in Uvalde with a $60 million campus built after the 2022 shooting, officials said.
- On Friday, Legacy Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas opened with a public ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m., and classes will begin on Oct. 20.
- The Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation raised more than $60 million, with the plan initiated two years ago and the project a three-year work in progress.
- The 116,000 square foot campus includes 36 classrooms, can serve up to 800 students, and features keyless entry, privacy gates, a visitor waiting area, and a first-responder road.
- Jesse Rizo said, `We recognize it but we have to adapt and we have to we have to be better than him. We have to always remember that. That we can't go back to that darkness anymore. We have to see the light that's ahead of us`` amid families' bittersweet reactions to the memorial with the number 21 and the Legacy Tree honoring victims,
- Amid mixed reactions from parents, the opening coincides with ongoing litigation as Pete Arredondo and Adrian Gonzales were charged earlier this year, with Gonzales's trial set for Jan. 5.
