Launch Of Digital IDs Is 'Game Changer' For IL Residents: Giannoulias

Illinois residents can add digital driver's licenses to Apple Wallet for secure use at over 250 TSA checkpoints and select businesses, joining 13 states plus Puerto Rico.

  • Nov. 19, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced Illinois residents can add driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet starting Wednesday.
  • Earlier this year a new Illinois law authorized digital driver's licenses, and the launch follows Apple's Digital ID rollout last week, expanding availability to 13 states and Puerto Rico.
  • To set up an ID, residents scan their physical card, take a selfie, complete facial/head movement prompts, then wait for Illinois to verify it, while data stays encrypted on the user's device.
  • TSA and select businesses will accept mobile IDs at more than 250 airports including Chicago O'Hare, Chicago Midway, and St. Louis Lambert, but Illinois residents must still carry physical IDs and law enforcement is not required to accept digital forms.
  • Next year, the program will expand to Google and Samsung Wallets on Android devices, letting residents selectively share personal data via encrypted exchanges for REAL ID use.
