PICTURE FROM THE ARCHIVE: Sugar beet hoeing gang on a farm near Newport in the 1950s or early 1960s. ‘Gangers’ employed women who were picked up by a coach from stops at Oakengates and Wrockwardine Wood. They went potato picking in the summer and sugar beet hoeing in the winter.
