Landslide buries residents in southwest China's Chongqing
More than 800 rescuers are searching for victims after the landslide buried more than 10 homes and cut utilities in the area, officials said.
- On Friday, July 17, 2026, a landslide in Pengshui County, Chongqing, killed at least eight people and left 34 missing, burying more than 10 residential buildings, Xinhua News Agency reported.
- Triggered by rain, the landslide occurred at 9:08 a.m. near the Wujiang River in karst mountains, with Pengshui County bordering Hubei and Guizhou provinces.
- Over 800 rescuers on site rescued ten people, including two seriously injured. Water, electricity, and gas supplies were cut off within a 0.6-mile radius to prevent further disruptions.
- Authorities evacuated more than 1,100 people and dispatched more than 8,000 disaster relief items, including tents, folding beds, and family emergency kits, to affected areas.
- Unstable terrain and the risk of another landslide hinder ongoing rescue efforts, according to CCTV, as teams continue searching through rubble with excavators.
